My Dad built a storm shelter after seeing the devastation that hit Gilbert, Iowa. A shelter is great, but maybe of equal importance is a family disaster plan.

After seeing some of the destruction by the tornadoes in Alabama last week, I'm pretty well convinced that most buildings would not have survived a direct hit and that a real storm shelter would be the only safe place. I grew up with tornadoes and remember seeing houses with storm shelters, but they have been neglected in recent years. I prefer houses with basements, but not so much for shelter as for convenience. I have given thought to building a vault in the basement when I buy a new house and may very well build a storm shelter. It could be accessible from the house, but should have its own entrance away from trees and structures so that the debris doesn't block the entrance. I have a cistern under the garage floor, but it's too small to be used as a shelter and doesn't drain. I might look at a precast tank or two for use as a shelter.

They really are! Do you have such things in your area? Seems like it might be a little hilly for a tornado.
